The fascinating world of ultraviolet (UV) radiation

As the summer approaches and we embrace the warmth of the sun, it’s essential to understand how different types of sunlight can affect our skin and overall health.

I know what you’re thinking – it’s currently ‘persisting’ it down – well that may be true BUT, once you have read this email you will understand the importance of protecting yourself effectively ALL year round.

Let’s dive into…

The fascinating world of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Understanding UV Radiation

Sunshine isn’t just about warmth and bright days; it harbours invisible UV rays that significantly impact our skin health. Here are the three primary types of UV radiation:

UVA Rays

UVA rays penetrate deeply into the skin and are primarily responsible for photoaging, causing wrinkles and age spots. Here’s an easy way to remember this – UVA – A is for ageing. They can also contribute to skin cancer over time.

Did you know: UVA rays are present year-round, even on cloudy days. They can even penetrate glass, so if you are in your office all day next to a window, or driving your car you can still be subjected to the ageing effects of these rays.

A photo published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows a delivery truck driver’s severe sun damage on his left side after 28 years of UVA exposure through his
window.

UVB Rays

UVB rays are the main culprits behind sunburn and play a significant role in the development of skin cancer. They primarily affect the outer layer of the skin. You can think of this as the burning rays, UVB – B for burning.

Did you know: Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is the marker for UVB protection and your product needs to be SPF30 or above.

UVC Rays

Fortunately, most UVC rays are absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere and don’t reach our skin.

Sunbeds and Skin Ageing

While sunscreen is essential for protecting against UV radiation from the sun, it won’t shield you from the harmful effects of sunbeds. These artificial tanning devices expose your skin to concentrated levels of UV radiation, primarily UVA. This exposure can lead to premature aging, characterised by deeper wrinkles, decreased skin elasticity, and an increased risk of skin cancer. The intense, artificial UV rays accelerate the ageing process, making your skin appear older than it is. For healthy skin, it’s best to avoid sunbeds altogether and seek safer alternatives for achieving a tan, such as self-tanners or bronzers.

Did you know: At Finesse Skin Clinic we offer a range of sunscreens, including tinted and Moisture Matte, an innovative, broad spectrum tinted, facial sunscreen with a matte finish. Available in Ivory, Sand and Amber to suit different skin shades. Save time and use this tinted sunscreen as your daily foundation.

Protecting against Blue Light

In addition to UV rays, we’re also exposed to blue light emitted by screens on our computers and mobile devices. Blue light can contribute to skin damage and premature ageing.

Top Tips for Effective Sun Protection

When choosing skincare products, including moisturiser’s and foundations, it’s essential to ensure you’re getting complete protection. Here are some essential tips:

1. Choose SPF 30 or Higher: Look for a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30, indicating protection against UVB rays. An SPF of 30 means it would take 30 times longer for your skin to burn than without it.

2. Look for Broad-Spectrum Protection: Ensure your sunscreen specifies “broad-spectrum” on the label. This means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

3. Check for a Five-Star Rating for UVA Protection: The packaging may include a five-star rating system indicating the strength of UVA protection. Aim for products with a higher rating for better protection against UVA rays.

4. Choose SPF30 or higher: While SPF measures UVB protection, a higher SPF provides extended protection, but remember to apply generously and reapply frequently.

5. Antioxidants Matter: Opt for products that include antioxidants such as Vitamin C and E, which help combat damage from environmental stressors like blue light.
